This was an interesting activity that we had to do, to drop a egg into a basket, without it cracking using 8 straws and some tape while dropping it with your arms straight while standing on a table. I think my group did well for step one. We wanted to make some sort of nest to protect the egg from cracking. Step 2 also wasn't a problem for us at all. We came up with several different ideas, and for many of them, we also came up with flaws. My team however bypassed Step 3 which is to generate alternative scenarios which may happen. One thing we forgot to discuss was how far out to stand on the table so we can get the egg in the basket without hitting the side of the basket, causing the egg to crack before it even goes in. So for the fourth step we just went along with our plan to create a little nest around the egg, I think we had well thought out plan. For the 5th step of implementation I was the person in my team that took the shot for 5 extra credit points, I don't think I was standing far enough on the edge of the table, so when I dropped the egg, it hit the side of the basket (the picture is a good representation of what happened to the egg) and the egg yolk splattered into the basket. So we got 0 points and lost the bas-EGG-ball game! I'm sure if we had the opportunity to do this again we would be well prepared. Overall I feel my team did a good job, even though we didn't get the points. We were able to communicate well and devise a strong plan. We could have been more effective if we thought about our task at hand more thoroughly by thinking about things that could have hand us back and how we would've handled them. But I still think we tried hard, and did very well.
i think everyone enjoyed this class activity a lot. You definitely made this activity more enjoyable when you began praying before you dropped the egg, david! it must have been painful when u saw your egg hit the side of the waste basket. i thought everyone did a great job creating the contraptions but many of them came down to whoever was luckier that day. oh well, better LUCK next time!
ReplyDeleteI agree, the project was fun. It was an interesting way of showing us the steps involved during the planning process. I do agree with you that your team work was 100% effective. You had fun and maybe a few more friends while practicing some planning techniques. My team also skip that 3rd step and didn't get those 5 points either. It is amazing how in text seems to be not that complicated, while in practice it is necessary and definetely a MUST. I remember that I was having so much fun, a big smile on my face until we drop the egg and didn't accomplish our goal. After that it wasn't that funny anymore. Our egg didn't break, it just had a tiny scratch on it.
ReplyDeleteOverall, the activity was good and made us exploit our creativity without letting pass what we are learning on our MGT class.
I am sure we will have something else like these kind of projects in the near future. Good luck with them too...
So it was your group's egg that missed the garbage can and your egg cracked even before reaching the destination. Better aim next time?! I guess now you know what to do next time, even though you're not to ask to make an egg protector, you'll at least learn that we have to go through the five steps of planning carefully and not miss every inch of planning. Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteI guess that praying you did, didn't work out too well. But it was quite sad how some people's egg didn't even make it into the basket and others spun and ended up falling on the sides without the straws etc. I think those people must have cringed and thought "oh man we didnt think that was going to happen" if you're lucky, maybe a class later on will do the same thing and this time you can be a leader and lead your team to success.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprise that your group actually went through the five step of planning, because before and after we got our hands on the materials we were just thinking about the design of the protector, even though it didnt work out at the end it was a fun class. And it was pretty sad that the egg cracked on the garbage can lol better luck next time.
